Is it necessary to have a 2nd shooter on your wedding day? No.
Do I suggest it? YES!
I recently booked a client who wasn’t interested in a 2nd shooter but I asked her if I could “plead” my case and she said ok. I went on to tell her about my main 2nd shooter. I didn’t tell her about her portfolio or if she even was any good, I told her about her heart [you can read more on Robin here]. I also told her that I can totally shoot a wedding by myself and I don’t need a 2nd but that I highly recommend it and that it’s worth the money. She booked my 2nd without hesitation. And boy I’m glad she did! I’m going to share with you some of my favorite photos by Robin at the end but right now I want to tell you why it’s a good idea to have a 2nd shooter!
- They see things differently than your primary. The angles they see or the candids they get are different from your primary which gives you a better variety.
- They are be where your primary can’t be. Need a photographer in the balcony? Check! Need someone to capture the guys getting ready at the same time the girls are? Done! While your primary is on one side of the room at the reception, the 2nd shooter can cover the other side.
- They allow more photos to be delivered. More photos is always better!
- They provide backup for your primary. While technology is great, it isn’t infallible. If something should happen to your primary’s gear (memory card becomes corrupted, guest spills a drink on the camera – this has happened to me, camera breaks, etc), you can rest easy knowing your 2nd had your back.
- They allow for your primary to focus more on you and less on the fuss. By fuss I mean, remembering to move gear from one area to another, they can snap a shot while the primary changes lenses, fix the brides hair/veil/dress, etc.
- They are awesome! I have had several 2nd shooters and they all treat my clients with love and respect. My main 2nd, Robin, goes above and beyond ALWAYS for my clients.
If you choose to not have a 2nd, it’s ok! For small weddings or budget conscience couples a 2nd may not be a great fit.
The shots below were captured at the wedding where I convinced the bride to hire Robin. I am so happy she did because these beautiful shots may have been missed. I will also mention, Robin kills it at detail shots! I was able to shoot the first dance and not worry about the details in the reception because Robin had it under control.
